Hello Frederick,

Identifying and locating an individual from an IP address is virtually
impossible. Here are links with more information:

Find The Geographical Location of a Host

NeoTrace Express 3.25
http://www.networkingfiles.com/PingFinger/Neotraceexpress.htm

I would suspect that this person has taken steps to cover himself by using a
"disposable" e-mail address. You can probably assume he is close since he
has targeted your wife, maybe even in the same office. If this is so, her
changing her e-mail address would, at best, only temporary interrupt his
efforts. I would suggest the following:

1. Forward the e-mails to: abuse@ (everything after the "@" in the email
address). Most ISPs and Web based e-mail account providers have strict
policies on SPAM and activities such as this.

2. Use MailWasher (free at http://www.mailwasher.net) to "bounce" his
e-mails. MailWasher bounces them from your ISP and it appears to the sender
that your address doesn't exist. Depending on how close this person is and
how well he can monitor your wife's activities, this may or may not be
effective.

Don't rule out the possibility that this person is a deranged and sick
weirdo and your wife is just another victim of his stalking activities. This
goes beyond it being a "prank" and should be reported to the local
authorities. No doubt they can refer you to other agencies that deal with
this sort of activity. Conduct searches at http://www.google.com for more
information. Here is one such site:

Stalking Resource Center -- National Center for Victims of Crime
http://www.ncvc.org/src/main.aspx?dbID=dash_Home

If this individual persists, sooner or later he will make a mistake and
expose himself. Good luck.

Sven Swanson, Sr.

Hello,

I've heard that source location of emails sent to you can be traced back
via IP address? My wife is receiving prank emails coming from a specific
email address. The problem is we don't know the location of this person so
we could get some hints if he/she is just someone within our place. The
contents of the mails are quite offensive to her and we almost had a fight
over it. Any suggested applications or workarounds? Changing of email
address is our last resort but currently, she is using it for business
purposes. Hope to hear from you guys, thanks.

Frederick
