Hi Jim,
In checking some of the online forums it seems there are some third party
applications, Spyware Doctor 3.5 for one, that can interfere with chkdsk
running. Check these links for more information and suggested solutions:

I am unable to run CHKDSK, it cannot lock or open volume for direct access.:

Subject: [PCSOFT] chkdsk on WinXP
I ran chkdsk. It said it had to restart. It did so and gave the message
"Checking file system on C:"
"Cannot open volume for direct access"
I found a note on this from Microsoft where they say one should download
Service Pack 2 to fix it. I did so a long time ago and am up to date on
updates.
How can I get rid of this stupid message every time I log on and how can I
run
chkdsk (btw I run chkdsk from: my computer, c:, properties, tools.
