Depending on what you are trying to get listed, if a business site and
you are not sure of what you are doing, have a professional do it.
One mistake (like the way you get listed in Yahoo!) stays forever. It
is almost impossible to get it changed. That one is a directory as
are many. There are three phases to a website, design, optimization
and submission. It is rare you will find one person/company that is
an expert in all three.
The search engine and directory rules are changing very quickly. Some
SEs will drop your site and put you on 'the list' if you submit often,
do cloaking, redirects, irrelevant keywords, doorways, linkfarms, etc.
AltaVista is coming down hard on this, as is AOL, Inktomi, Excite and
GoTo. It is another field entirely and there are other boards for
specific discussions. A last thought... 30,000 new sites go on line
daily. Less than one third of the entire web is even indexed. Of
1,000 submitted, 160 will be accepted to be indexed, of those 8 will
make it to the first two pages of results.
