I am pretty sure that all works files can be opened/converted in Office 2007 version. I would also recommend checking out the free download of Office 2010 Professional Beta it works great the interface takes some getting used to.

I don't think it matters. I have both installed  with no issues.
If you have any works files that you need to keep, convert them before
uninstalling.
