  If *I* wrote such a worm, it would either (a) infect the *player* software
-- your mp3 files would be safe anywhere until the moment you tried to play
them, or (b) infect the OS, and attack the mp3 files whenever you tried to
open/read/copy them (which would include playing them, but wouldn't be
limited to that).
  In either case, the only way they'd be safe would be if the media they
were stored on was read-only, such as a CD (or a CD-R/W in a CD (not CD-RW)
drive).  The drive letter would not make any difference -- they could even
be in a folder shared from another machine.

  Of course, the RIAA hasn't called me, so this is only an educated guess.
