Hi All:
I am hoping someone here can help me. I have an old Gateway 120 Mhz which I use simply for Word Processing, and connecting to the internet. It has worked well for 5 years. However, about a year ago, the system became dramatically slower than it had ever been. Knowing that my kids had all kinds of junk installed and downloaded, I decided to format my hard drive, and re-install Windows 98SE, MS Office 97, IE 6.0, FaxWorks, Quicken 2000 Deluxe and Norton Systemworks. All seemed to go ok (except I couldn't figure out how to back up my contacts (from Outlook) to a floppy, since it would require more than 1 floppy). Anyway, that seemed to be successful, and the computer again ran fine until a month or so ago. Figuring that there might be some type of conflict, I thought I would uninstall all programs except for Windows 98SE, then do a "Governemnt Wipe" of the free space on the hard drive, and then re-install the programs. Actually, I did the wipe 2 times, just to make sure everything except Windows was erased. I then began to install each program one by one. I re-installed Quicken 2000, and then opened it to make sure it worked properly, and to my surprise, all of the data (5 years worth) was still there!!! I expected that since I had uninstalled the program, and then "cleaned" the resulting free space on the hard drive, that I would have to re-create all of my bank accounts, and then use "restore backup file" from Quicken. Why did the information not erase? I should state that I ran the Government Wipe from CD, NOT from the hard drive, since I had already uninstalled Norton Systemworks from the computer. Any ideas??? Please send a copy of any reply to my e-mail address ([log in to unmask]) since I am not sure I will be able to find this link again. Thanks in advance.
Jeff
