Are you by chance using Rich Text Font?
This problem was discussed on another list.
It seems that replying with RTF causes the
cryptic symbols to be sent instead.
It appears to be a bug in OE 5.0 and later.

The other list could not find a cure other than to
use plain text instead of RTF.
