In addition to the other recommendations, if while online you use a preview window, eg, as in Outlook Express, you are opening each message previewed. If there is html - probably hidden - in the message, it will probably signal back online to the sender, and you are then targeted as a "live one." 
In addition, this connection may be to a possibly malevolent website.
So disengage the preview window when online.
