Okay that at least gave me some piece of mind. I really didn't have a clue
and went to the PCsoft list first. I learned from Don this is a problem
that occurs on a semi regular basis for some. But I can't leave well enough
alone. Don also mentioned that buried in some discussion forums were people
having the same problem. The best way to find these forums is of course
www.google.com . I entered QuickTime windows lockup. You would think from
the results I got that QuickTime never worked on windows. Well not true but
there have always been some quirks with it. The most common being modifying
the qtw.ini file and change "driver" to "bmp". I tried that and got the
infamous BSOD ( Blue Screen of Death ) . I look at that as progress I wasn't
getting that before. The problem was I was being BSOD at startup. It is hard
to modify a file with the original backup ( Yes I made a copy of the
original file ) when you can't even get a desktop. So let us F8 that puppy
at boot up and enter safe mode. Change it back to the original file.
Restart. Now move all my icons on my desktop back to where they were.
Because safemode always moves my desktop icons to a place different than I
want them.

Now I completely read the articles on qtw.ini modifications and learn this
is basically for Win95 and QuickTime v2. ( note to self : read the whole
article before jumping the gun.)

Then I perchance see some stuff on changing file type associations for later
versions of QuickTime. Especially if you have Windows Media Player v7 or
better. Well on a quirk I go to
http://support.academic.com/academicknowbase/root/public/4101.htm . It isn't
a troubleshooting site . It is some kind of online academic program. They
run their lessons in quick time. I follow the instructions( all of them ).
Change file associations according to instructions . Video settings and
sound settings also. Close up the QuickTime icon and shut down the computer.
And at the risk of being struck by lightning I offer up a kind word about
Bill Gates and Steve Jobs and restart the computer. All appears normal
.....No BSOD.....we have desktop. No I click on QuickTime with fingers
crossed and .....walah it works. It asks if I want to change my file type
associations I click "NO" . I didn't do all this just to go back to where I
started.I quickly link up with a Lord of the Rings trailer to double check
and we have lift off.

I hope that this will guide others in the right direction if they are having
a similar problem. I now have QuickTime v5 running on my machine.
Thanks,
Brendhan
