Hello Dennis,
I'm going to beat that horse a little harder now. :)
Technically, the version from PKWare is not free either - if you read
when you use the DOS version, it says that they'd like you to register if
you like the program. It's a steep $55 registration fee, but the DOS
version is a lot more versatile than any of its Windows counterparts. A
good freeware one that I use is EnZip, which is basically a Winzip clone.
I believe you can find it at http://website.lineone.net/~chris_m, or if
not, try www.download.com and do a search for EnZip.
And, some interesting trivia is that PKWare was not only one of the
original companies to use this compression method - They were the ones
that invented it. "PK" in PKWare stands for Phil Katz, the programmer who
developed the algorithms. Sadly, he passed away last year, I believe, and
nobody took notice. I heard it announced on another internet newsletter,
but no major news sites even mentioned the poor guy. He really did
contribute a lot by providing a compression format that became the
standard for file compression.
I love the DOS version of PKUnzip, and I wish the guy would get more
recognition - That DOS version really made my life easy when I ran my
bulletin board system back then - anyways, I'm starting to get off topic.
:)
