Subject: [PCSOFT] ie 7

hello again bob,

ditto what you reported about ie7's frequent problems with flash. it's common knowledge.

i've been using ie7 for quite a while now and have stuck with it because it offers a useful tabs feature like firefox and it loads more quickly at startup than other browsers. this faster startup is understandable because the ie7 team has access to windows sourcecode that their competitors don't, giving them a definite and some would say lamentable unfair advantage.

other than tabs and quick loading, i don't see much reason to recommend using ie7 as a primary browser at this point in time. it is still very buggy, doesn't play at all well with outlook express, runs into situations where it shuts down on regular basis and phones home to microsoft to report the sad news. hopefully the ie7 development team will make good use of the debugging dumps that pour in from the field to better understand and refine the product, and from what i read i don't believe they're planning to fix ie7 -save for critical security issues- but rather simply learn from it and incorporate that knowledge into ie8 which i know them to working on at this very moment for release somewhere down the road. probably sooner than later.

as regards add-ons, i haven't experimented much with them because of ie7's more fundamental problems and because it's not here to stay. otoh, using add-ons in firefox is straightforward and a pleasure.

one last thing to set the record right: i am not a microsoft basher or hater and will use quality software that is done right, no matter who the publisher.

hope this helps a little. kind regards,

                                               ... jeff.
