Thanks Don - sorry that I didn't give enough information. I did the virus
scan with the most recent version of Mcafee and there were I think 3
different viruses show up. I searched in my own computer (desktop) running
all the same programmes and couldn't find that file either so it seems like
the virus did a lot of damage. In the end, I did as you recommended and
used the computer's restore CD to take it back to the beginning. Of course
I had to rebuild all the applications but fortunately we are on a household
network so some things were a little easier to do. Probably worked out for
the best because this computer was really reacting slowly to all commands
and now it's pretty good again. The viruses must have been everywhere.
This computer did not have a current virus checker on it as we hadn't used
it for several months but once I got the household network working, we have
been using it at home and leaving a different laptop at the office. Some
lessons are hard ones but this one wasn't too bad I guess. Thanks. Dianne

You haven't given us much info. I've never heard of that file---it isn't
on my system, anyway.

I'd guess that the effects of the virus(es) have not been fully removed.
Try a registry restoration--obviously from a known good registry backup
made before the system became contaminated. That should fix the problem if
it's only a simple matter of a changed File Association. But, unhappily,
most modern viruses are more subtle than that.

Otherwise, if it's a real bad virus (if you'd stated which one, and which
OS, readers may be able offer more constructive help), and the regular a-v
sites cannot remove it, you will probably need to do a reformat, or try to
run the "Restore" disk if it's that sort of computer.

With XP you might be able to use its Go-back facilities, though that too
might be disabled.
