Where I work, we use MS Backup to have users Backup their documents to a
network drive. Right before Y2K, we put out a bulletin advising everyone to
run their Backup Set so that they had a current Backup on the Server (which
consequently gets copied to a tape). Well, for that week before New Year's,
we had almost everyone call us about that error. We had been struggling with
it for weeks before.
The solution is simple, there is even a MS Knowledge Base article about
this, but the number escapes me. You need to go to Start>Settings>Control
Panel>Regional Settings. Click on the Time tab, and under Appearance next to
Time style, remove the ss and the colon before it (i.e. change h:mm:ss tt,
to h:mm tt). It would seem that at the point MS Backup fails it is trying to
write its log information, but the extra information for the seconds pushes
it past what the List Manager will support (this is from memory, I don't
have the article in front of me).
In our case, we ended up implementing a simple .reg key run through Windows
NT logon scripts to make the change for everyone in the company (500 pc's,
two languages, two country's). It worked great.
I hope that this helps.

When I backup my folder, I have started getting the following message:
"Microsoft Backup has encountered a serious error in List Manager. Quit
and restart Backup, and then try again. [After doing this I still get
the message.] Quit Microsoft Backup and all other running programs,
restart Backup, and then try again. [After doing this I still get the
message.] If the problem persists, try reinstalling Backup. To
reinstall Backup, look up 'Add/Remove Programs' in the Windows Help
Index."
