I've thought of it, and actually did it years ago with a video
camera (large) and motor cycle batteries.

Do NOT forget you will have some chlorine gas problems
with lead acid batteries... (Chlorine gas is a poison.)

I would worry about the APC charging circuit being "over-taxed"
by a battery with different specs than the original.

I eventually had a battery leak, but I had it in a small cooler
to make it easy to carry, so there was no mess...
