This is a very common fault with QT 4 and later. It simply won't work on
many computers, and techies I know won't allow it on their client's computers.
Apple have a tech forum buried (very hard to find---surprise, surprise??)
on their QT site, but don't seem to offer much support and don't seem to
have any answer to why it works on some and not others. The forum is (or
used to be, I haven't seen it for a while) full of questions similar to
Brendhan's, with few answers in most cases.
I have QT3 which is fine, but I've twice tried QT4 and 5 with exactly the
same results--a complete freeze as soon as you try to open a file with it.
You might find an alternative method of installing it if you hunt around on
the forum site. Apparently this can work in a few cases.
I don't know why many Web developers use it on their sites, in view of its
known deficiencies and the fact that so many people can't use it.
Unfortunately, new QT files won't run on QT3.
