Following Dean Kukral's suggestion I removed SP2 from my machine 2 days ago, and have not had a loss of video event since. Apparently this is an SP2 upgrade problem. I could not find any reference to it in the MS knowledge base but maybe it will make it there as more experience with the SP2 upgrade accumulates. Someone suggested to me it might be an Norton System Works + XP Pro (SP2) interaction, but I couldn't find any reference to it on the Symantec site either.

For now I've decided to abandon the SP2 "improvements".
