This is not the ideal solution, but it works for me.  When booting, I
switch the scanner on, just for the bootup and start, then usually
switch it off.  That way, it boots fine, and the scanner is always
ready to use, just turn it on, since it was detected during boot.  If
you leave it off, then you have to reboot for windows to recognize it.
