Windows 2K and XP require the system BIOS have ACPI enabled. You can see
which HAL is running by opening the Device Manager, and expanding the
"Computer" device. If it says "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" or "ACPI
Multiprocessor PC", then this is OK. If not, you would need to check your
CMOS settings to see if there is a setting to turn ACPI on or off. If it is
off, you probably cannot just turn it on though, as the Windows HAL is
different for each, and the system may not boot if you change it. What you
would have to do if the system is NOT running the ACPI HAL, is to shutdown,
change the CMOS setting, then boot off your install CD and do a repair
re-install of Windows XP. This is not something to be attempted by the
faint of heart.
