It sounds like you backed-up the files to a CD-R and that ALWAYS makes
a file write protected. (Once burned, can't be changed.)
There are exceptions to that. You could have put the file/files in a ZIP archive
and burned that. (A topic for another time, since this is way too late.)

Have you tried to put the files on the hard drive and change the attributes THERE
and then use the file(s) from the hard drive?
