Go to ControlPanel and check the settings for FindFast (or is it
FastFind?). MS Office installs this utility unless you explicitly
deselect it. It is a file indexing program that causes everything to
slow to a crawl when it runs. By default, it is set to run every 2
hours. I don't know if this is what is causing your slowdown, but it is
worth checking. I found that the indexing never helped me, so I don't
install this Office utility.

It's now sooooo sloooow. But that's to be expected when they add bloated
programs to an old computer. What's bothering me is that at times my
hard drive starts running and keeps running and grinding and running,
and I'm not doing anything that should require writing to the disk. When
I hit C-A-D, I get quite a few items that I don't recognize:
