Start/Settings/Control Panel/Automatic Updates (configures automatic
updates)
Then  uncheck the box in front of "keep my computer up to date"  I think
this is what you are looking for.

Win2k system. An icon appears in the system tray that when clicked,
opens a window to update the Microsoft system (think it looks for
micro$oft  updates). Couldn't find what program is putting that in the
sys tray. Also looked in the all users and administrator start-up
folders to look for and delete shortcuts. Couldn't find any. Can anyone
tell me how to get rid of this thing?
