David - being essentially lazy, I tend to avoid in-depth analysis of why apps don't work, preferring the simpler approach of giving the prog a 'go' for a while, then either continuing to use it or dumping it forever if it doesn't shape up.
For me, Norton Antivirus, from 2003 onwards, has worked itself into the latter category. I've had enough experience of watching it's sluggish, fumbling performance screw up customer's computers, to put me off it forever.
There are so many efficient and unobtrusive anti-virus programs available, that it's not worth struggling with a space-consuming drone like Norton.
PS - Thanks for the tip about W98 support - best news I've heard for some time! I'm almost tempted to dump XP and go back to it.

with a fixed-size FAT16 swap partition, DMA enabled on the hard drive, set
the type as "Network Server", maximum read-ahead and hardware acceleration,
and so on.
But the NT/2K Task Manager has spoiled me. I want to see which processes
are taking how much CPU, RAM, etc -- and the tools I've got currently are
not up to the task.
So if you know of such a tool -- especially if it's cheap or, better yet,
free -- please recommend it to me. Or if you've found an obscure tip,
something I might be likely to have overlooked. that's good too.

[*] There's been much discussion here in the past about Microsoft's
announcement that they would discontinue support and critical updates for 98
SE as of Jan 16th. I see, just today, that they have bowed to popular
demand and will be continuing support until 2006.
