Lew, if you just want to back them up in case of loss you just need to back
up the files they reside in. Most Word macros get stored in Normal.dot which
you should find at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates, but there
could be others. Normal.dot contains lots of other personal settings and
should always be backed up.

Excel macros are either in individual workbooks or in Personal.xls, normally
at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\XLStart - you have to specify
when you're creating the macro.

If you want to save them for inclusion into other documents, then I think
you'll have to export them.
