Alan:

I think you're missing the point: The whole idea of enditall is to
insure that _nothing_ is written to the partition being defragmented;
therefore, it is essential to shut down any other program that may
access the drive. That's why many people recommend going to safe mode,
as that avoids loading programs that might interrupt the procedure.
(Think of it this way: I give you a deck of 35 cards in random order,
and ask you to sort them. Halfway through, I give you five more cards
and tell you to include them with the original 35. A minute or two
later, I toss three more on the heap. Sooner or later, you're going to
lose track of what is going on, and you'll be forced to start all over.
OK, maybe you can handle a deck of cards, but what if the deck has
thousands of cards?) I strongly recommend shutting down your cable
connection during the defrag -- as well as virus-scanners, screen
savers, and anything else. Otherwise, you will have nothing but
problems. Then, when the scan is completed, do a reboot, and enjoy your
well-organized disk.

There are some ways of reducing the time to defrag. First, do it on a
regular basis such as once a week. It will go a lot faster. Second,
there is (was) an option to organize the drive to optimize performance.
(The idea is that if commonly-used files are stored near the beginning
of the drive, then they will load more quickly.) I'd turn that off -- it
never seemed to make any difference that I could notice.

As for shutting down your cable connection, look at it this way: You
can't drive your car while the oil is being changed, either.

Carroll Grigsby
