Update: Since the middle of last year (2011) Magic Jack Plus has a similar device
that can be used in 2 ways , either via a USB port or plugged into a router.
Their cost is a little lower than NetTalk.
Initial cost is $ 69.95 and includes 1 year of service.
Cost there after is $29.95 a year ($19.95 on 5 yr plan)

Don't know about reliability of service as compared to NetTalk.
Some areas seem to have more trouble than others.
Looks like it may depend on which servers are accessed.
However ,there is a 1 month trial period.
Other choices may be to buy a net enabled SIP phone and use a service like http://www.voip.ms/
Very low cost calls. Also other devices can be used.
