Ray, this is just a wild shot, perhaps you've already done this: Go to Tools>Internet Options>Advance>Multimedia and make sure there is a check mark in Show Pictures.

I re-installed the IE updated support pack, and all the images reappeared. Until the comuter was rebooted. I have also determined that it is the .gif files that it is not displaying.
