Hi Fred,
I spend several days a week cleaning up virus stricken computers and the
most valuable tool I have found is a stand alone program called Stinger.
You can download the most recent version at:
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
Once you have copied the file to your computer, just double click on
Stinger.exe to run the program. It is probably a good idea to run it in safe
mode. I open the preferences and select "Scan Boot Sectors" and "Scan all
Files" before running a scan.
Usually I run the scan, reboot and run the scan again until it comes up with
no viruses two times in a row.

Here's the latest "progress" on my virus problem... I've scanned for
viruses, using Norton's with the latest definitions, first by attaching the
drive to my laptop with an IDE/USB adapter. One found, one deleted.
Scanned again, same connection, no viruses found.
Installed the drive in the Win98 machine and booted. Cannot start MSCONFIG
or REGEDIT, except in safe mode. When in "real" mode, each program appears
for a blink and vanishes.
Installed Norton's and updated to definitions of one day old level, scanned,
found one virus, deleted it. Rebooted, scanned and found no viruses.
MSCONFIG and REGEDIT still does the blink in and out routine.
Rebooted into safe mode, scanned and found no viruses, looked in MSCONFIG
and REGEDIT for any apparent issues, found nothing.
Restarted in real mode, scanned, found no viruses, still MSCONFIG and
REGEDIT blinks in and out.
Do I have a problem other than a virus? I think not, but how many more
scans have to come up empty to result in no solution?
advice encouraged.
thanks
