My XP systems are amongst the most stable I use.
I can think of at least three ways to make an XP installation "unstable"
in the manner you describe:
1. Spyware, virus, or other malware infestation. Are you familiar with the
Task Manager? Do you have up-to-date anti-virus and anti-spyware tools
installed and running?
2. Was this an install from scratch, or an upgrade over a win 98 install?
If the latter, you may have applications or drivers that require tweks to be
compatible with XP.
3. You've told us how much RAM you have, but nothing else about the system
hardware. If you ran win 98 on it, it may include components that are not
fully supported by XP or are not adequate for running XP or are simply
beginning to fail.
