Actually, many new DVD players do support AVI files. That is one reason I
got my Philips DVD player to replace an older Sony unit. When a data DVD
with an AVI file is placed in the player, an explorer type of display is
shown that lists the available files to select for play.

I assumed the writer simply wished to burn his .avi files so that he could
play them on his computer. Provided he has an appropriate program such as
Gom Player, VLC or similar, that will not be a problem.
If he wants to play them on a domestic DVD player, then of course Peter's
right and he will be out of luck. Data files will not play on domestic
players (at least, none that I know of).
