Many applications use the ".$$$" extension for local temporary files which
are *supposed* to be deleted when the application exits. Normally, the file
only exists when it is "in use".
Occasionally, such an application will crash or otherwise exit abnormally,
and leave such file(s) behind. Since the program didn't delete it, it
probably didn't properly close it either, and so a scandisk/chkdsk my be
needed to properly recover it (for deletion).
