Subject: [PCSOFT] slow computer

I've ran the scan disk and defrag the system. It's still slow.
Any other suggestions?

Hi Krishmaa,

There are several things you can do to help speed up your computer. Here are
a few suggestions:

1)Install more RAM - 48 megs is good, but 128 megs will improve performance
considerably.

2)Install programs in c:\program files -- (eg. c:\program files\Microsoft
games\etc.) Many users
simply install programs into C:\ which can bog the system.

3)Use control panel/add-remove programs to un-install programs you don't
use.

4)Keep the recycle bin empty.

5)You can safely delete all the files from your C:\win95 folder. All those
files are on your windows 95 CD-rom if you should ever need
them -( I never have ). If you find any folders in your win95 folder, do not
delete them, just the files in the win95 folder. ***Be careful that you
don't accidentally delete C:\Windows !!***

6)Keep your 'temporary internet files' folder clean - double-click My
computer/ control panel /internet options / general tab, then find the
delete files button and hit it. If you have never done this, you'll be
surprised how much space you'll reclaim. Also, just below that, you can set
the # of days to keep history for. If you find you never bother to check the
history of where you've been, then set the # of days to zero. Besides, isn't
that what the favourites are for?

7)Find your C:\Windows\Temp folder and delete its contents, not the temp
folder itself, but everything in it is safe to delete. You should do this
regularly. You can ignore the warnings as long as you NEVER delete the
actual Temp Folder.

8)Check your 'Start-up' folder. Having too many programs starting up during
the boot process is incredibly time consuming. To do this, click Start -->
Settings --> Taskbar...click the 'Start Menu Programs' tab, then click
'advanced'. Double click the 'Programs' folder, then click the 'Start-up'
folder. How many items do you see there? I have none. Anything in there
should just be short-cuts, which can be cut and pasted to your desktop, then
transferred to your taskbar - I keep them in a folder named 'Short-cuts'
right on my desktop.

9) There are many files which can, and should be removed from your system
occasionally. A wonderful little program named 'Smart Cleaner' for just that
purpose can be found at: http://www.scaramouch.com/en_dwnl_direct.asp
The program is user friendly, has a 30 day trial, and will initially rid
your system of 20 - 50 megs of useless files. Just read up on the help
before doing anything.

10) And finally, *whew* visit the site below for other computer maintenance
tips. You can email me directly <[log in to unmask]> if you need help with
anything I've suggested here. Good luck!
