I am an enthusiastic user of the free version of 
www.dropbox.com
Easy to set up with a clear, uncluttered interface.

It is possible to have "shared" folders where friends have 
access to the files stored there, as well as private 
folders for your own use.

For a friend to have access to a "shared" folder they have 
to install their own copy of Dropbox. 

If you only have a one or two files to share then Dropbox 
will give you a URL direct to the particular files which 
the friend can then download, without having their own 
Dropbox account.

The instructions and help given on the Dropbox site are 
excellent.
