Since the away person wasn't at their desk to *run* the mail client,
the message probably wasn't generated by client software. This is
almost certainly a feature of the *server* software that is used at
that site.
So in your case, you want to find out if MS Mail has this feature. I
would be a bit surprised if it does, but I don't know for sure.
In my experience, automated replies like this don't work very well if
one is subscribed to mailing lists like PCSOFT. But it might work okay
for your boss...
