I don't know why the books all say that.  I've always simply held F8 down
until the boot options open. I've been doing it that way for years.
Although you get a few complaining burps from the computer, it seems a lot
easier and more certain. Also less wear and tear on the F8 key contacts.

Is there any reason why it should be tapped rather than held down?
