"Java" is a programming language, used to write code which can be
downloaded to run within the browser. The downloaded code is packaged in ZIP
files, and these are typically retained on the client computer in case
they're needed when the same site is visited in future.
"Javascript" is an HTML extension that allows instructions to be embedded
in a .html file and carried out by the browser. These instructions are not
downloaded as separate ZIP files, and their execution can be controlled by a
browser setting to allow, deny, or ask when a page includes a script. It's a
different technology with a similar name.
