Harold,

I'm kind of late arriving at this party, so I don't know all the details.
Sometimes, with a particularly obstinate problem, you can end up trying
soooo many different "fixes" that you end up wandering deeper and deeper
into the woods. When that happens, it is very easy to lose track of
where you have been and even where you are going.

It sounds like that's where you are now....
deep in the woods ... without a map.

I think it is time for you to scrap everything you have been doing
(no offense intended to those who have been helping you)
and start over fresh at ground zero.

PRE-INSTALL:
1. Go to a functioning machine with the EXACT same version of
    Windows and make a brand new fresh boot disk. Make sure
    the disk includes: SYS.COM, FORMAT.COM, FDISK.COM,
    MSCDEX.EXE, EXTRACT.EXE, SCANDISK.*, DRVSPACE.BIN,
    COMMAND.COM and HIMEM.SYS
2. Copy the correct CD-ROM driver to the floppy.
3. Set up CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT with the CD files.
    Make sure that CONFIG.SYS includes only these statements:
          DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS
          BUFFERS=20
          FILES=60
          DEVICE= your cd driver and only the bare minimum
                         of switches. (/L: and /D:)
4. Clean the Windows 95 CD. --- Make sure that you use a 100%
    cotton cloth and ONLY wipe in straight lines from the center
    hole outwards to the edge (like the spokes on a bicycle wheel).

INSTALL:
1. Boot into the BIOS, select the option to load the default values.
2. Double check and make sure the BIOS anti-virus settings are disabled.
3. Boot to your fresh floppy.
4. Run FDISK and delete ALL partitions.
5. RE-boot the PC.
6. Run FDISK and create your needed partitions.
7. RE-boot the PC again.
8. FORMAT drive C:
9. Copy the entire CD to the hard drive.
10. Run SETUP from the hard drive to install windows.

Yes, there are lots of extra steps which aren't normally needed...
but this isn't a normal situation <g>.

Good Luck!

Jim Meagher
