Betty & Preston,

Good Idea if you don't need specific Windows programs. BEOS and Red Hat
are good. Another choice is Lindows [based on Linux] which allows you to
run certain windows programs like Microsoft Office 97 on it. Also you
could have someone partition your computer and install a dual boot to run,
say, Windows 2000 or XP [very stable and they allow dual boots] on one
partition and then boot into either Linux or Lindows on the other partition.

That way you would be able to run all of your old programs on the Windows
partition and get new programs for the other [by the way, Linux programs
are much cheaper than Windows programs - many are free! And lastly, Linux
OS's are very stable. You probably will never see the "blue screen of death
again."]

When selecting a new operating system be sure to go to the web site of the
manufacturer, because you can probably get it for free, or almost free
there vs a retail store where you will pay much more. You can download it
[probably free] or request a CD [some cost but less than retail].
