I have a collection of short movies and movie clips. Can anyone tell me why
some of the icons appear to be dimmed. I can see the icons but they seem to
be partly transparent. It must indicate something but I've looked around and
can't seem to find an explanation.

Sounds like they are "hidden" files. Right-click on one of the dimmed icons,
select "properties" and see if the "hide" or "hidden" box is checked. You
can set your computer to show or not show these files or folders. The exact
steps to do this may vary depending on your operating system
