Here's a 'For What It's Worth' about AVG antivirus.

A W98SE customer recently had a problem with Outlook Express 5.5 locking up
when opening.

I'd just done a fresh install of his OS, and Outlook Express had been fine
for about two weeks until developing this problem.

Turned out it to be the mail checker in AVG 6 (free version).  When it was
configured to check Outlook Express, it locked up.  When it was
de-configured, no problem.

AVG were helpful, and finally offered this solution (and I quote):

"What you could do is disable the plugin,  and run the proxy component -
http://www.grisoft.cz/beta/avgemc/avgemc455us.exe,  set it up for the mail
account and your problem will be solved"

I downloaded the file but haven't run it yet.  If anyone else uses it, I'd
be curious to know what happens
