If your email program renders HTML, especially if it honours JavaScript,
then es, there's a risk. Most modern email programs allow some way to
disable or at least defang HTML messages.
Odds are that your antivirus gets at least one chance to scan the message
before you open it, but that won't help much if it contains a virus newer
than your latest AV update.
