Bob,
Have you tried connecting to the printer via an IP address? I had
an HP that I loaded a driver for and the address that the printer took
by default was 169.254.0.1. I started up a web browser and put in
that address and from that point I could log into the printer from its
web interface and then set the permanent IP I wanted it to use on my
network.

just my 2 cents,
Derek

P.S.
I found the address by doing a configuration page printout on the printer.
