Hi Loy,
There are several reasons for this.
Directly related, it could be that your Icon Cache is set too low.
Rather than explaining it,there is an excellent article found here:
http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-5164407.html
An interesting twist on this is here (creating categories for icon cache)
http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/pub0009/LPMArticle.asp?ID=56
While the above may well fix it, icon refresh speed depends also on the Desktop which
is loaded by Windows Explorer (explorer.exe)
The following items will also affect refresh recovery speed:
1.Having a lot of icons on your desktop
2.Having a lot of programs running.
3.Having a lot of services running in the background. Some of which may not be needed
at all.
4.Improper or insufficient page file settings.
Programs that are high resource users will affect refresh rate -AV and other malware
scanners,Graphics programs while processing large numbers of pictures or other
graphics, Video and related programs.
For services - the Indexing Service is another resource hog -if not needed, turn it
off.Similarly for Desktop Search which also heavily uses indexing of files and folders.
IOW,streamlining your computer will help to prevent slowdowns like that.
Hope this helps,
Peter E.

Subject: [PCSOFT] Desktop Icon Question

Good morning,
Many times when I use Windows Explorer to open an application, the program icons on
my desktop will disappear for short time and then be regenerated by Windows (I
guess?) one at time. Any idea what causes that to happen and is it possible for
me to stop that from happening.
I'm running WinXP SP3 with a gig of RAM and at least a hundred gigs of hard disk space.
Thanks...
Loy
