William,

I'm running Windows ME on an HP Pavilion 8860 and have been frustrated with shutdown problems as
well. Assuming yours came with Win 98 pre-installed, as did mine, then you may be interested to
know that it's quite likely some of HP's files (namely, their vxd's - virtual device driver files)
that's causing the problem. I searched Microsoft and they suggest a selective startup to help
diagnose the problem - their conclusion was third party vxd's. I've found that the shutdown
problems occur if I try to shutdown too soon after closing a resource intensive program (namely,
Outlook Express). If I wait 10 seconds after closing OE, the problem does not happen. This is only
a temporary fix - my intent is to format the drive and do a clean install of Win ME - the recovery
disks that came with my PC would do the same except it would install HP's files again - I have to
buy Win ME to rid my computer of HP's files. Needless to say, they don't care. Hope this helps.
