Ian, I have run into this very often while using IE any version. I tend to
believe that the site was done this way intentionally.
Instead of clicking the back button, click the down arrow beside it to
access the list of sites previously visited. Usually the one giving the
problem is the first one listed, so skip over that one and click on any of
the previous pages you have visited. Normally this works.

One other note of interest - I changed over to Mozilla a few months ago,
strange, but all annoying stuff has stopped. No more of the problems you
mentioned in this email. Also, by  checking a setting in the preferences, I
no longer get those pop up ads or webages any more.really nice, I do not
miss them at all.
