I believe that there is a "Rollback Driver" for all devices under Windows
XP. Just run devmgmt.msc, select the device and look at the driver
information. The rollback button should be there. It is there for my modem.

I recently had Windows Update offer me a driver update for my video card.

Except it turned out that it was actually for a different model, also made
by ATI, and was not in fact fully compatible with the hardware in my
machine.
When I went to the video card entry in Device Manager and checked its
properties, I found a button (on the Driver tab, I think) that said
something like "Revert to previous driver"; clicking it caused the name of
the device to revert to its previous setting and I once more had a working
display.
Is there something similar on the modem entry?
