Here's how it's done in Quicken 6. It should be similar in Quicken 4.
Select:
File | File Operations | Year-End Copy...
Then pick "Start New Year"
This will archive the old data (which you can backup separately) and start a
new file (you can set it to include all 1998 transactions) which you'll be
able to backup onto one disk. That should fix your problem...
