The most likely reason is that some other program running in the background
is attempting to access the drive while you are scanning and/or
defragging. The most likely candidates for this problem are antivirus
software or your screensaver, however anything could be the cause.
Here's what you should try.
Disable your screensaver by setting the screensaver to "none" in the
desktop properties.
In the system tray (lower right corner of the screen - you must be using
Windows 9[58]/NT/2000 if you have a C:\ drive), right click on any programs
icons sitting there and exit out of as many as you can to shut them down.
Use Ctrl-Alt-Delete to stop any other programs. Pretty much the only one
you don't want to stop is Explorer. If you accidentally stop a program you
shouldn't have and your system locks up then just reboot and start over
(just remember to leave that program next time). ;-)
Scandisk the drive and then Defrag the drive. It should go all the way to
completion.
Reboot to start up all your programs again.
Good Luck,
