Jan,

There is a setting in your modem's properties which you can control.
HOWEVER, your ISP also has controls which have final authority
to disconnect you if your PC is idle for too long.

To check your own settings:
RIGHT-click on MY COMPUTER and then select (click)
on PROPERTIES.
Now click the DEVICE MANAGER tab and then
double-click the MODEM to open up the lower level.

Click the "inner" modem to select it and then
click the PROPERTIES button.

Click the CONNECTIONS tab and make the changes to
your DISCONNECT timer as you see fit.

Finally start clicking OK buttons until you back all the way out.

change your settings so if you are away from your computer for a while, and
on line, your connection will not be terminated. Could somewhere please tell
me how to adjust that setting? thanks, Jan
