Dear Listers,

I've recently clean installed Windows XP Pro with service pack 1 on my 1 ghz, 512 MB RAM home build.  I have a NetGear FA 311 Fast Ethernet Adapter.  However, the icon in the system tray has a red "X" on it and when I open it says Network cable unplugged.

I have a Westell WireSpeed 2100 Modem (external) and would like to install the software, etc., but since my network card is not being read, the installation will not go past the part where it is reads the equipment.

I am not networked to any other computer and am using the ethernet cable that came with the modem.  I've also used another ethernet cable that I have and I know its good with the same results.
