Holding a key down will activate the auto-repeat function. This is
equivalent to tapping the key repeatedly at a very fast rate. The only
problem with this is that you will overflow the keyboard buffer and the
computer may beep at you, as you have noted. Other than the annoyance of the
beeping, I see no problem with doing this.

I don't know why the books all say that.  I've always simply held F8 down
until the boot options open. I've been doing it that way for years.
Although you get a few complaining burps from the computer, it seems a lot
easier and more certain. Also less wear and tear on the F8 key contacts.

Is there any reason why it should be tapped rather than held down?
